Historical Financials
| ₹ Cr | FY25 | FY26 | Q1 FY27 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 43,571 | 44,873 | 11,689 |
| EBITDA (reported) | 18,127 | 19,003 | n/a |
| EBITDA margin | 41.6% | 42.3% | n/a |
| Cash EBITDA (after leases) | ~9,100 | 9,217 | n/a |
| Net profit / (loss) | n/a | 34,552* | (3,754) |
*FY26 profit includes a one-time, non-cash AGR exceptional gain (₹57,491 Cr in Q4). Excluding it, we estimate an underlying FY26 loss near ₹22,900 Cr (derived). Bank debt was ₹726 Cr, NCDs ₹3,300 Cr and cash ₹3,715 Cr at March 2026. Spectrum deferred payments were about ₹1.25 trillion at December 2025.
DCF Valuation
10-year FCFF, WACC 12%, terminal growth 5%
Cash EBITDA grows about 15% a year to FY31 in the base case (₹9.2k Cr to ₹18.5k Cr), then slows. Capex is ₹14–15k Cr a year in FY27–29. Claims deducted at present value: spectrum payments (₹7k, ₹15k, ₹27k Cr in FY27–29, tail assumed), AGR dues and net bank debt.
| Case | EV (₹ Cr) | Claims (₹ Cr) | Equity / share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bear (tariffs stall) | ~35,000 | ~1,17,000 | ₹0 (floor) |
| Base (≈15% cash EBITDA CAGR) | ~60,600 | ~1,17,000 | ₹0 (floor) |
| Bull (≈22% CAGR, Jefferies-like) | ~1,21,800 | ~1,17,000 | ₹0.5–2 |
Weighted DCF value is roughly ₹1 per share, rounded up for optionality. Cash flows alone do not support the market cap. The stock is priced as an option on tariffs and state support. Inputs are analyst estimates; the post-FY29 spectrum schedule is assumed.
Relative Valuation & Peer Multiples
We use EV / FY28E reported EBITDA (about ₹22,000 Cr), deducting spectrum dues of ₹1.25 L Cr, AGR at book ₹24,880 Cr and net bank debt near ₹0.3k Cr. Lease liabilities are not deducted, which flatters the result. We apply 10.5x, a discount to Airtel’s roughly 11–12x for weaker ARPU and negative free cash flow.
| EV/EBITDA | 9x | 10.5x | 12x | 14x |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Equity / share | ₹4.4 | ₹7.5 | ₹10.5 | ₹14.6 |
| Broker | View | Target |
|---|---|---|
| Jefferies | Buy | ₹20 |
| UBS | Neutral | ₹14.5 |
| CLSA / Nomura | Hold / Neutral | ₹13 / ₹12.6 |
| HSBC | Reduce | ₹8.25 |
| Emkay | Sell | ₹6 |
Targets are from press reports dated between January and October 2026 and may be stale.
Earnings Power Value (EPV)
Normalised cash EBITDA of about ₹9.2k Cr roughly equals maintenance capex before any debt service, so steady-state earnings power is close to nil. EPV is ₹0 today. It turns positive only if tariffs lift cash EBITDA structurally.
Sum-of-the-Parts (SOTP)
Not applicable. Vi is a single-segment mobile operator with no separable listed subsidiary. Section 9 uses a probability-weighted scenario sum instead.
News, Controversy & Sentiment Overlay
| Factor | Evidence | Adj. |
|---|---|---|
| SBI-led loan | ₹25,000 Cr loan advancing; ₹6,400 Cr first tranche raised; SBI disbursal awaits private banks | +5% |
| Tariff hike | Broker view of ~15% hike from Dec 2026; Jefferies: 10% hike ≈ +34% equity value; timing unconfirmed | +10% |
| Jio IPO | Seen improving sector pricing discipline | +5% |
| Govt 49% holder | Backstop against distress, but conversions dilute | +5% |
| Funding gap | Spectrum payments ₹7k/15k/27k Cr FY27–29 exceed cash EBITDA after capex | –5% |
| Sentiment | Four straight down days to 23 Oct, below all moving averages after a sharp one-month correction | –5% |
| Dilution | Jefferies sees ₹16,000 Cr equity in FY30 plus ~₹15,300 Cr spectrum-to-equity conversion | –5% |
| Net overlay | AGR relief and the Bombay HC one-time spectrum charge ruling are treated as already priced | +10% |
Synthesis: DCF ₹1 (25%), EV/EBITDA ₹7.5 (55%), NAV ₹0 (10%), EPV ₹0 (10%) gives ₹4.4. With the +10% overlay that is ₹4.8. The probability-weighted scenario value is ₹7.9. We average the two and round to a weighted fair value of ₹6.5 (range ₹5–9), about 41% below the current price. Controversies noted: the Q4 FY26 headline profit was an accounting gain, Q1 FY27 was still a ₹3,754 Cr loss, and the one-time spectrum charge ruling by the Bombay HC may be appealed.

Future Growth
Growth rests on ARPU migration from 2G to 4G/5G, industry tariff hikes and operating leverage, since lease costs are largely fixed. The ₹45,000 Cr capex plan targets 4G/5G coverage and capacity in priority circles, and reported BSNL infrastructure sharing could cut costs. Jefferies models cash EBITDA growing about 25% a year to FY31; our base case is 15%. Fresh equity and bank funding must arrive before spectrum payments peak in FY29.

Domestic fund holding has risen for four quarters, but the largest scheme-level positions are arbitrage funds (Kotak, ICICI Prudential, Invesco, Aditya Birla Sun Life), which hold the stock as a hedged leg rather than a directional bet. Figures are entity-level and may lag the live quarter; see BSE/NSE filings for scheme-wise and FPI-wise detail.
Verdict
Weighting all methods and the news overlay, this analysis suggests Vodafone Idea is worth about ₹6.5 per share, against roughly ₹11.1 today. The relief on AGR dues is real, but ₹49,000 Cr of spectrum payments, negative net worth and likely dilution leave little margin for error. This analysis suggests an avoid or reduce-into-strength stance at current levels, with fresh interest only below about ₹6.5. For anyone holding, a 3–5 year horizon and risk capital sized for a possible deep loss are what the evidence supports. The upside case needs tariff hikes, loan closure and capex to land together.
